An applicant recently posted on Linked-In about her work experience with the firm below:
“I had the honor of completing a two-day work experience program with Jerman Samuels & Pearson LLP (JSP), a leading criminal law firm based in Essex known for its outstanding service.
On the first day, I visited Colchester Magistrates’ Court and observed sentencing proceedings, including a case involving assault and criminal damage. I shadowed Chloe Goodey and Ian Clift gaining valuable insight into the workings of the criminal justice system. I also sat in on client interviews, observing how skillfully they built rapport and trust in a remarkably short time—demonstrating their commitment to clients’ best interests while upholding the rule of law.
The second day was spent at JSP’s Southend office, where I engaged in valuable conversations with trainees. Hearing their journeys and achievements was inspiring, especially seeing their contributions at a young age. It was motivating to witness their passion for upholding justice and helping others.
I spoke with trainee solicitor Natalie Jeremiah, who generously shared her day-to-day responsibilities. Her dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm left a lasting impression.
Later, I accompanied Kim Edgley to Southend Police Station, where she explained key legal procedures, including the interview process, pre-interview protocols, and the significance of PACE codes. I observed two live interviews between clients and police, which was both eye-opening and educational. Kim’s ability to build trust and communicate effectively stood out.
In the afternoon, I visited Southend Magistrates’ Court with Ian Clift and observed hearings, gaining deeper insight into courtroom procedures and legal principles in practice.
Through these interactions, I developed essential client care skills, particularly in building trust while maintaining professionalism and emotional sensitivity. I gained a stronger appreciation for clear communication, active listening, and ethical responsibility in legal practice. Most importantly, I understood the profound impact legal professionals have on vulnerable individuals—advocating, reassuring, and helping clients navigate difficult moments. This experience reaffirmed my belief that beyond legal knowledge, the heart of the profession lies in helping people, giving them a voice, and striving for fair outcomes.
I am immensely grateful to Ian Clift for this unforgettable opportunity. It has deeply reinforced my aspiration to pursue a career that makes a meaningful difference—supporting vulnerable individuals and contributing to justice and fairness in society.”
